Common Questions

Frequently Asked QuestionsEverything You Need to Know

Planning a trip to Sri Lanka? Here are honest answers to common questions about our tours, booking process, and what to expect.

About Pearl Routes

Why should I choose Pearl Routes?

We are a team of local experts and SLTDA-licensed guides dedicated to showing you the real Sri Lanka. Unlike large, impersonal agencies, we offer: (1) Founder-led care for every booking, (2) 100% transparent pricing, (3) Deep local knowledge that gets you off the beaten path, and (4) A commitment to sustainable travel that benefits local communities.

Are your guides licensed?

Yes, absolutely. We work exclusively with guides who are fully licensed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). They are trained professionals with years of experience in safety, history, and hospitality. You are in safe, expert hands.

How is Pearl Routes sustainable?

Sustainability is at our core. We prioritize: (1) Fair wages for all staff and partners, (2) Supporting local eco-friendly accommodations, (3) Using electric vehicles where possible (we have our own EV fleet), and (4) Ensuring 60-70% of your tour cost goes directly to local communities. We don't just greenwash; we act.

Booking & Payment

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept: (1) International bank transfers (most common for overseas travelers), (2) PayPal (3.5% processing fee applies), (3) Credit/debit cards through our secure payment gateway (Stripe), and (4) Local bank transfers for Sri Lankan residents. We require a 30% deposit to confirm bookings, with the balance due 30 days before your tour starts.

Is my deposit refundable?

Yes, with conditions: If you cancel 30+ days before your tour, you get 100% refund (minus bank transfer fees, ~$25). If you cancel 15-30 days before, 50% refund. Less than 14 days before: no refund (we've already paid guides, accommodations, etc.). We think this is fair - we're small and can't absorb last-minute cancellations, but we protect you if plans change early.

Is my payment information secure?

Absolutely. We use Stripe (PCI-DSS Level 1 certified) for all card payments, meaning we never see or store your card details. Bank transfers go directly to our business account (account details provided after booking confirmation). PayPal provides buyer protection. We also sign a formal contract for every booking, so you have legal protection.

About Sri Lanka

Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Most visitors need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). You can apply online at eta.gov.lk. It usually costs $50 USD and is approved within 24 hours. Some nationalities get free visa on arrival - check the official site for the latest list. We can help guide you through the process once you book.

When is the best time to visit?

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination! (1) Dec-April: Best for South & West coasts (beaches) and Hill Country. (2) May-Sept: Best for East Coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee) and the Cultural Triangle. (3) Oct-Nov: Inter-monsoon (can be rainy everywhere, but lush and green). We'll customize your itinerary based on when you travel to chase the sun.

How much should I budget for extras?

Besides the tour cost, budget $15-30/day for: tips ($5-10/day for guide, $5/day for driver), alcohol ($3-8/drink), souvenirs ($20-100), and personal shopping. Meals not included in your package are cheap ($3-10/meal). So for a 7-day tour, bring $150-250 USD extra. Credit cards work in cities; carry cash (LKR or USD) for rural areas.
